For many artists, touring is a great way to connect with fans and earn some money while promoting their work. While there is no hard rule on the percentage touring artists and promoters can take, many artists take 85% of the gross and the tour promoter takes 15% of what’s left, according to The Knowledge Burrow. Investing in your creativity while traveling can have a positive impact on your life. Besides earning a considerable amount of money, you’ll have increased exposure, reach a new audience, and tap unlimited opportunities.

However, creatives living on the road often have to deal with the repercussions of a fast-paced lifestyle. The pressure of traveling can affect your mental and physical health, personal life, and career. With this in mind, planning is essential before you can embark on a tour. Below are a few tips to be successful as a traveling artist.

    Pick a Destination

The key to choosing the right travel destination is finding somewhere that speaks about your interests and creates room for career development. Therefore, think of the things that inspire you to create music, art, or screenplay. Then pick a destination that offers opportunities to be creative. For example, Europe is home to some of the most admired pieces of art globally. If you’re an artist, this could be a perfect location to seek inspiration in art exhibitions or take part in art competitions. If you plan to travel while playing music, you may consider destinations like Memphis, Liverpool, or Havana.

    Choose Your Transportation Mode

Choosing your transportation as a touring artist can be challenging. First, you must decide how you’ll get to your destination and how you’ll be moving around. For instance, if you’re going on a cross-country tour, a van, tour bus, or truck could be a perfect option.

The type of vehicle you choose will depend on the size of crew, your budget, and schedule. For example, a dual rear wheel pickup truck has unique features that enable artists to travel long distances successfully. Note that this type of vehicle, often referred to as dually trucks, are like other pickup trucks, but they have two extra rear wheels and higher towing power. This means you can tow a camper where you can cook, bath, and sleep. Compared to a van, trucks are convenient and affordable.

    Manage Your Finances

After researching and planning your trip, think about your finances. Figure out how you’ll survive when you’re on the road until your artwork, music, or acting pays off. You can offer classes online, do a bit of blogging or vlogging, or take on a side job. With that said, take time to create a travel budget. Budgeting for a trip helps you book the right accommodation in advance and have enough funds for airfare, fuel, food, and emergencies.

Artistic creativity and traveling are an excellent combination, as they create a sense of freedom and inspiration. However, being a touring artist can be stressful if you don’t plan. To be a successful artist on the road, choose a destination that suits your interests, invest in the right transportation, and manage your finances wisely.
