The United States is 322 times bigger than Belgium HOWEVER Startups and Small Businesses there can now raise 5.7x MORE than their U.S. counterparts via Crowdfunding???
Why should one of the smallest countries in the world have a higher cap than the United States? We have more businesses, a greater need, a greater opportunity, and a greater appetite from investors.Doesn’t seem right, does it?
Since July 21st, entrepreneurs in Belgium can raise up to €5 million where this was previously €300,000. That’s a 16.67x increase in their cap!
Regulation Crowdfunding launched on May 16, 2016. Since then, over 1,160 companies (in 80 industries across 45 US States seeking up to $703M in financing) have filed with the SEC with over $147M committed by 153k investors and $140M funded to date. The average success rate (as defined as exceeding a minimum funding target) for issuers is currently 66%. Successful companies are reporting $290M of Revenues. The market is steadily growing with steady increases in size and number of filings.
There has been no fraud, over 5,000 jobs have been supported, companies are raising funds in less than 90 days AND there is more disclosure (i.e. disclosures = investor awareness = investor protection) in Regulation Crowdfunding than almost any other part of the private capital markets.
All of this great progress is happening with a US$1M cap. But imagine how much more impact our economy could expereince if we moved the cap to US$20M!
